NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Four people were injured after a shooting early Friday morning in New Haven, police said.
“There was some kind of breach or back and forth between two groups it seems like. And then someone pulled out a gun and then somebody returned fire," said Chief Karl Jacobson with the New Haven Police Dept.
Just after 2 a.m. Friday, police were alerted to several gunshots, along with a person who was shot, near the 800 block of Chapel Street. A 22-year-old man from Hamden was found and taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Other New Haven officers on their way to the scene were flagged down and alerted to another gunshot victim on Church Street by Center Street. They found a 19-year-old woman from West Haven with a gunshot wound, who was unresponsive. She was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital and remains in critical condition as she faces life-threatening injuries, according to police.
“We are praying for her and her family, that she makes a recovery," Jacobson said Friday afternoon.
During their investigation, officers were alerted to a 21-year-old man from Hamden who was also shot. Police say he was with the woman who is now fighting for her life.
A fourth victim, a 19-year-old man from New Haven, later arrived at Yale New Haven Hospital by a private vehicle.
All of the injuries to the three men were non-life-threatening, police said.
New Haven detectives learned the shooting primarily happened on Church Street by Center Street and that two of the victims fled the area following the shots.
“To think of any young person who has their whole life ahead of them, that was hit by gunfire and unfortunately, this young woman is in critical condition now, we hope she makes it through," said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.
A gun was found at the scene, and ballistic evidence was also found. Police have made an arrest on the scene but have not released any details on the suspect. Police are also in the midst of issuing a warrant for another person's arrest. Officers said both suspected shooters have a criminal history, including weapons charges.
In the meantime, New Haven police said they will have a strong presence in downtown New Haven for the time being. On Friday night, Jacobson said he and other assistant chiefs will be on watch.
"We want our businesses to thrive. We want people to come to new haven. And we had a situation like that and that’s why I wanted to come out and be very clear today that the downtown area will be safe," Jacobson said.
Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has any information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department's anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
