The incident happened last week at a shopping plaza on Whalley Avenue and was seen on social media.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven emergency services dispatch supervisor was charged with assault after an incident at a shopping plaza last week was widely shared on social media, said New Haven Police on Monday.

Justin Augustine was charged with Assault in the 3rd Degree, Threatening in the 2nd Degree and Breach of Peace in the 2nd Degree. He was released on a $2,500 bond. Augustine is a supervisor in the Public Services Answering Point (PSAP), the City of New Haven’s civilian fire and police department dispatchers.

Police said that on June 14 at 12:06 a.m., New Haven police officers were called to a home in New Haven for an assault which occurred several hours prior at a different location.

It was initially reported as an argument which happened in a shopping plaza on Whalley Avenue, but a later call approximately two hours later clarified that someone had been assaulted.

Video footage showed a male slapping a man who was seated on the ground outside a store in that plaza. Officers were unable to identify the man at that time. Partial video of the incident, including the slap, was widely shared on social media. The man was subsequently identified as Augustine.
