A 10-year-old boy and his mom were shot at through their window in New Haven while sleeping Tuesday morning: Police

While the mom wasn’t hurt and the boy is back home with minor injuries, police are searching for a suspect. Police do not believe they were the intended targets.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A 10-year-old boy from New Haven is back home from the hospital after police said gunshots were fired into his house while he was sleeping next to his mother early Tuesday morning.

Police said the mom wasn’t hurt and the boy had minor cuts to his feet. At this time, officers are not sure if those injuries came from bullets or shattered glass.

“That’s just the saddest thing that could ever happen to a child. And the poor mother, I hope she’s doing okay,” said one New Haven neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous.

Police said just after 2:40 a.m., at least six shots were fired near the corner of Congress Avenue and Redfield Street. Some of those bullets went through the bedroom window of the home where the boy and his mom were sleeping.

“We believe that somebody intended to shoot into the back of the house. But we don’t believe the people in the house are the intended targets,” said Chief Karl Jacobson with the New Haven Police Department.

Jacobson said the boy was sent to the hospital with small cuts to his feet after the incident.

“Although his spirits were good and he has minor, minor injuries, we’re not sure if the bullet caused it or the glass from the glass breaking but, still, we’re treating this as a 10-year-old shot,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson visited the family in the hospital overnight, after responding to the scene.

“I had a conversation with the 10-year-old who was upbeat until I told him that we would protect his family, and then he started to cry,” Jacobson said.

As police search for a suspect, they stood guard outside the home throughout the day Tuesday.

“We’re very lucky this morning that we don’t have one or two deceased people. We’re very lucky. We’ve gone through a spat of violence, and we’ve done a lot to try to calm it down. We just got to do more,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson said the last couple of weeks have been particularly violent, with 16 non-fatal shootings in the Elm City. Police have been working with local and federal partners to crack down on the troubling trend.

“We are going to track these people down. Like, this has to stop,” Jacobson said.

Police believe the gunshots came from a driveway down the street. They have identified a vehicle they think was involved in the incident and are working on following up on leads.

No arrests have been made in the case at this time.
