NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven man received a sentencing of 65 years in prison for a fatal shooting in the city in July of 2020, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice Monday.
The sentencing comes after a jury found Rashad Hardy, 49, of New Haven, guilty on Aug. 28 of murder and carrying a pistol without a permit. He was also convicted of criminal possession of a firearm in a separate proceeding in court.
Citing evidence from the trial, the DCJ said that Hardy shot Ricky Newton, 36, of New Haven on Rosette Street in New Haven on July 10, 2020.
Newton died of his injuries minutes after the shooting, according to the DCJ.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Hardy, who was extradited from Maryland in August of 2020 after state troopers located him.
Newton's family members attended the sentencing hearing, including his son who was 10 years old at the time of his death, the DCJ said.
Judge Elpedio N. Vitale said Hardy had an "extensive criminal history" and referred to the shooting as "an assassination," according to the DCJ.
