Residents escape, cat dies in 2-alarm New Haven fire

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Nine people became homeless after a 2-alarm fire in New Haven on Friday night. No one was injured, but a pet cat did not survive.

New Haven fire officials said that a call for a fire at 213 Winthrop Ave. came in at 7:50 p.m. The multi-family home was 3-stories and fire personnel observed a heavy fire on the first and second floors on arrival. There was some fire on the third floor.

The fire was declared to be a 2-alarm fire and firefighters fought aggressively to put it out.

Five adults and four children were home at the time and everyone got out safely with no injuries. The Red Cross said it is assisting a total of four families, which include six adults and seven children.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
