WALLINGFORD, Conn. — Wallingford Animal Control, with the help of other towns, relocated 37 dogs hoarded in a garage to shelters, according to the town's police department Sunday.
On Feb. 23, 2023, animal control received an anonymous letter about "a lot of dogs barking" at a home on Benham Avenue, which police said was determined to be coming from a red garage on the property.
According to police, the owner and her son gave animal control access to the garage, where they found a total of 37 mixed breeds of dogs living inside.
In the garage, investigators found "a bowl of dirty water on the floor and layers of newspapers covered in feces and urine," police said.
Over a period of months, the dogs were provided veterinary services and provided shelter with assistance from the towns of Meriden, North Haven, East Haven, New London and Poodle Rescue Connecticut, Inc. in Naugatuck. Wallingford Animal Control led the investigation.
In a Facebook post on Aug. 31, PRCT said that they were contacted about the hoarding situation and took in four of the dogs.
"We would have loved to take all 37 but our brains said no even though our hearts said yes," the rescue wrote in the post.
