WATERBURY, Conn. — Dashcam released Tuesday shows a wrong-way driver colliding with a trooper's cruiser on Route 8 north in Waterbury, according to Connecticut State Police.
State police said that at 1:15 a.m., Troop L had given information to Troop A about a car going the wrong way in the left lane of Route 8.
A trooper who was working on a nearby highway construction project went to the area of the car going the wrong-way, determined to be a Toyota Prius. As seen on the video released by state police, the Prius collided with the front of the trooper's cruiser.
Both cars came to a stop after the crash and no injuries were reported, state police said. The driver of the Prius, described by police as an elderly male, was reportedly disoriented and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
The man was issued an infraction for violation of driving the wrong way on a divided highway.
State police are asking people with elderly family members to ensure that they are physically and mentally capable of driving before getting behind the wheel, and if needed, determine if they need a medical evaluation of their driving abilities. Anyone on the road is also asked to contact 911 to report wrong-way drivers when safe and available to do so.
