Suspect dies from injuries after officer-involved shooting in West Haven: Officials

The Office of the Inspector General took over the investigation, according to state police. No officers were hurt in the shooting.

WEST HAVEN, Conn — A suspect has died from his injuries following an officer-involved shooting in West Haven Thursday, according to officials..

The Office of the Inspector General took over the investigation, and state police reported no injuries to officers in the shooting.

Officials said that officers with the CSP Violent Crimes Task Force and New Haven Police Department Criminal Intel Unit were in the area of Boston Post Road for an investigation at Splash Car Wash.

Around 5 p.m., a suspect reportedly displayed a gun. Officials said a Connecticut State Police sergeant and New Haven police officer shot and injured the suspect.

New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said Thursday evening that the suspect, identified as a 36-year-old New Haven man, died from his injuries.

The suspect was known to police, Jacobson said while expressing sympathies to his family.

"Even though you're arresting people, you get to know them. You get to know their families and you don't ever want this to happen," Jacobson said.

According to Jacobson, the Inspector General's office will release body camera footage from the incident and additional information in a preliminary report within four days.

"We work extremely hard to be safe, and we've been safe for a long period of time, and unfortunately this happened today," Jacobson added.

The New Haven State's Attorney assisted at the scene, according to state police. Central District Major Crime Squad detectives assisted the Inspector General's office with processing the scene.

"On behalf of New Haven, we express our deepest condolences to the family," New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said.
