WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Six West Haven establishments received a Friday night surprise, as town and state officials conducted a series of unannounced compliance checks, the West Haven Police Department reported.
As a result, El Rincon, Boku and Tropical Caribbean were shut down until further notice after being found to have multiple violations. “Stop work orders” were issued to each business.
Randall's, Scoreboards Cafe and Johnny's Grille were all in compliance and remained open, according to police.
In addition to the police department, the compliance checks were conducted by the Dept. of Labor, Liquor Control, the Building Dept. and the West Haven Fire Marshall's Office.
The police department said that the unannounced inspections are the first of many to occur in West Haven this year.
During the compliance checks, Tropical Caribbean restaurant owner Juan Reyes was arrested on a warrant concerning a fatal shooting that happened in the business’ parking lot last November. On Nov. 26, 2023, officers discovered a male victim with gunshot wound injuries in the parking lot in the vicinity of Campbell Avenue; the individual later died from his injuries, police said.
Reyes was charged with possession of an assault weapon, illegally altering or removing identification marks on a firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine.
Reyes is currently being held on bond.
Police report that more arrests are likely to come as the homicide investigation continues.
