West Haven holds election to fill vacant seat in state legislature

The seat opened when Dorinda Borer was sworn in as West Haven mayor.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — The voters in West Haven have selected the person who will fill the open position in the General Assembly's 115th District.

The seat, which represents a portion of West Haven, became vacant on Dec. 2, when Dorinda Borer resigned after she was elected to serve as the city’s new mayor.

On Tuesday, voters overwhelmingly selected William Heffernan III, a Democrat, to fill the seat. He beat out Republican Silvana Apicella, Independent Edward O'Brien, and Victor Borras, a write-in candidate.

Heffernan received 1,007 votes, while Apicella received 410. O'Brien received 390 and Borras got 52.

Borer served in the state legislature for seven years and had run unopposed in the 2022 election.

The Democratic lawmaker served on the 115th Assembly District since 2017. She beat the Republican mayoral candidate, Barry Lee Cohen, and write-in candidate Steven Mullins on Nov. 7 to become the city’s second female mayor. She earned the highest vote totals for mayors in decades.

Borer, who was sworn in on Dec. 3, succeeded Mayor Nancy Rossi, who did not seek a fourth term in office. She is West Haven’s 13th mayor.
