WATERFORD, Conn. — Two Connecticut men who allegedly stole more than $1,050 of merchandise from the Target at 900 Hartford Turnpike in Waterford were arrested on Monday afternoon.
State police said the suspects are Scott Bourgeois, 33, of Lebanon, and John Jones, 47, of Putnam. Bourgeois was charged with fourth-degree larceny.
Jones, who allegedly drove the vehicle the men used to flee the scene, was charged with fourth-degree larceny, second-degree reckless endangerment and disobeying the signal of an officer.
On Monday, law enforcement personnel with the CSP Organized Retail Task Force, CSP Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force, CSP Traffic Services Unit, Troop E Montville Patrol and Waterford Police Department’s Detective Bureau visited various large retail stores in Waterford to conduct a proactive operation to combat high-end shoplifting and larcenies.
At each location, detectives worked with Loss Prevention employees, according to state police.
Around 3:40 p.m., state police detectives were notified by Loss Prevention of an active larceny that was unfolding at the Target on Hartford Turnpike. Loss Prevention identified the individuals, who left the store with over $1,050 of unpaid merchandise and ignored police commands to stop.
The two men, later identified as Bourgeois and Jones, entered a vehicle and left the store property with the stolen merchandise.
State police said the vehicle was followed until it stopped at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, at which time both Bourgeois and Jones were taken into custody without incident.
The merchandise was recovered, according to state police.
Both men were released from custody on $25,000 bonds and are scheduled to appear at New London Superior Court on Dec. 18.
