GROTON, Conn. — A wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle along Interstate 95 in Groton early Saturday morning, according to a release from Connecticut State Police.
Raheem Carter, 25, of Providence, R.I. was operating the wrong-way vehicle, a Toyota Corolla. State police said he was arrested and faces multiple charges.
These charges include operating an unregistered motor vehicle, improper use of license plate, illegal operation without minimum insurance, operating under the influence of alcohol/drugs, driving the wrong way on a divided highway and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
According to the release, at around 1:04 a.m. on Saturday, state police at Troop E in Montville received multiple calls reporting a car traveling southbound on I-95 northbound near Exit 90 in Stonington.
State police noted that troopers were responding to the area when they were advised that Carter’s Corolla was involved in a head-on crash in the area of Exit 89 in Groton. The police report noted one individual suffered minor injuries in the collision.
At the scene, troopers observed that Carter was exhibiting signs of possible impairment. He agreed to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety tests, which state police said he did not perform to standard.
While investigating, troopers determined that Carter was operating with a suspended out-of-state driver’s license and that the license plate displayed on the Corolla was a misuse. The car wasn’t properly registered or insured either, according to the release.
Carter was taken into custody and brought to Troop E, where he was processed and charged, the release said.
According to state police, Carter was released on a $2,500 cash/surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment on Aug. 12 in New London Superior Court.
