COLCHESTER, Conn — A 36-year-old horse slipped on ice in Colchester and was rescued by local firefighters on Monday morning.

Colchester first responders received the call just after 11 a.m. about a horse that had slipped and couldn’t get up at a property on Prospect Hill Road. The horse had been down for close to two hours.

The 18 personnel at the scene were able to lift the horse to its feet using ropes and a backhoe loader.

“Fortunately, some members recently took a large animal rescue course and were able to work together to brainstorm some ideas to get the horse on its feet,” the Colchester Fire & Emergency Medical Services said in a Facebook post. “We would like to extend a huge thank you to Paradise Agency LLC for letting us use their backhoe loader machine to assist in this rescue!”

After the horse was lifted up, it was able to walk back to its stall uninjured, officials said.
