LEDYARD, Conn. — A New London man is dead after the car he was riding in crashed while fleeing from police, officials said.
The crash happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Route 12, right at the town line with Preston and Ledyard. A Ledyard officer reportedly made a motor vehicle stop for a speeding violation.
Behind the wheel was a 23-year-old woman from New London. Inside the vehicle were two passengers, one of them being 27-year-old Aaron Baldwin Jr., also from New London.
According to officials, the driver took off while in the middle of the stop and sped away from the officer. The officer and several witnesses reportedly saw the driver illegally passing other vehicles on Route 12 going north.
A minute later, Ledyard dispatch received several calls reporting a roll-over crash on Route 12 near Holmberg's Orchard in the Gale's Ferry part of town.
Once officers got to the crash, they learned that the traffic stop vehicle was the one that had crashed. The driver and the second passenger managed to get out of the vehicle alone while Baldwin had to be extricated by first responders.
All three were taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich. Just over an hour later, Baldwin was pronounced dead.
Ledyard police did not state whether the driver had been charged with the traffic stop or the crash.
Members of the Regional Accident Investigation Team are conducting the investigation. If anyone has information about the crash, police ask them to call the Ledyard Police Department at 860-464-6400.
