AVON -- Avon Mountain spent about seven hours completely shut down on both sides in Avon and West Hartford after a fatal two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon.
The two drivers were taken to the hospital, and one of them later died. Police said a 33-year-old woman was driving “aggressively” and “erratically” before she was killed in the crash. Police identified her Thursday as Kelly Gregory of Simsbury. The other driver's injuries aren't life-threatening.
The crash happened around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday afternoon near Renbrook School, a private day school on Albany Avenue, also known as Route 44.
According to police, it appears a car was driving eastbound when it veered out of its lane and into the opposite lane, hitting a car heading westbound.
More than 10 years ago, Avon Mountain was the scene of fiery crash that killed four people and injured 19. On July 29, 2005 a large commercial dump truck that was filled with debris was heading west down the mountain on Route 44 when its brakes failed. The truck careened into a group of cars waiting for the light to turn green.
The road reopened around 9:30 p.m.
