NORWICH, Conn. — An accident in Yantic, a neighborhood of Norwich, on Saturday around 1 p.m. resulted in a minor engine fire but no serious injuries.
The incident occurred on Route 2 eastbound at Exit 28 south and prompted an immediate response from Yantic Fire Engine Company #1, which posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon.
Eighteen firefighters were dispatched to the scene for a reported rollover with entrapment and fire. The fire units arrived just three minutes later to find that the driver had already removed themselves from the vehicle. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle.
While the driver wasn't stuck, a small fire had ignited in the vehicle’s engine compartment. Crews quickly extinguished the flames, and the scene was cleared in about 40 minutes.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was evaluated on-site. Firefighters then reopened the Exit 28 ramp to 395 southbound, which had been temporarily closed during the emergency response.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the driver.
