Stop & Shop shoppers prepare for closing of 5 Connecticut stores by November

By Nov. 2, locations in Ansonia, Torrington, Stamford, Milford and Danbury are set to close.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Stop & Shop, the northeastern-regional grocery chain, will see five locations closing in Connecticut in less than a month.

According to a company spokesperson, the following locations, determined underperforming in their area, are set to close on or before Nov. 2:

    • 100 Division St., Ansonia
    • 211 High St., Torrington (931 Torringford St., Torrington will remain open)
    • 1937 West Main St., Stamford (2200 Bedford St., Stamford will remain open)
    • 855 Bridgeport Ave., Milford (1360 East Town Road, Milford will remain open)
    • 72 Newtown Road, Danbury (44 Lake Avenue Ext., Danbury will remain open)

Shoppers said the grocery store is a staple in these towns.

"Stop & Shop is the pinnacle of most towns," shopper Virginia O'Brien said. "It's frequent by those of wealth and it's a sign of wealth and it's a sign that it's going under...it's closing."

However, with inflation on the rise, O'Brien said people are saving money when it comes to buying groceries.

"Sometimes you can't always have the best of the best to survive," she said. "You have to go to Aldi, let go of the name brand stuff like Boar's Head."

O'Brien moved back to Ansonia six months ago, but previously lived in town for 28 years. She remembered the store as bustling, but now it's almost deserted.

"I just came back six months ago and it's been nothing...like 30 cars here," she said.

Once the Ansonia store closes, O'Brien said the regulars that shop here will be impacted too.

"They have to let go of something they're used to going to this is convenient for many people," she said.

When the impacted locations close, employees will be reassigned and fortunately, there are a handful of other grocery stores nearby for people in the area.
