VERNON, Conn. — A driver is dead after they drowned in a Vernon pond following a crash, police said.
The Vernon Police Department received several 911 calls just after 10 p.m. reporting a car had crashed in the area of Snipsic Street and East Main Street.
When Vernon officers arrived at the scene, they found an unoccupied Chevy Malibu with "significant front end damage" near an apartment building on East Main Street.
According to officials, when officers began looking for the driver, they found a man who matched the driver's description. Officers saw the man trying to swim across the nearby Papermill Pond.
Officials said officers monitored the man until he slipped under the water. The fire department, Vernon EMS, Rockville first responders, and the Tolland County Dive Team were called to the scene to help with rescue efforts.
The man was found in the water and taken out. While efforts were made to resuscitate the driver, he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 33-year-old Hartford resident Julio Feliciano.
If anyone has information regarding the crash, they are asked to call Vernon police at 860-872-9126.
