MANSFIELD, Conn. — A woman was arrested for stealing cash from a Mansfield restaurant where she was an employee, according to Connecticut State Police Wednesday.
Jennifer Spencer, 28, of Rockville, is facing charges of burglary in the third degree, larceny in the fifth degree and risk of injury to a minor.
State police said that on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., troopers from Troop C in Tolland were called to the restaurant for a report of an active burglary.
The restaurant owner told state police that they suspected an employee had been stealing cash from the business for about three weeks. State police said the owner had also observed multiple unusual logins to the register system.
According to state police, the owner said they noticed the employee going into the restaurant two days in a row during hours when they weren't supposed to be there. After driving into the business Tuesday night and finding the employee's vehicle pulling in, the owner called 911 and reported the burglary.
As state police arrived at the restaurant, along with police from the nearby UConn Storrs campus, Spencer was spotted leaving the restaurant at a time which the owner noted she did not have permission to be there.
Investigators found Spencer with cash that was taken from the business, according to state police. They also found that her young daughter was left inside of the vehicle while she was in the restaurant.
State police said that a family member was contacted to take custody of the child, and that Spencer was arrested before being released on a $5,000 bond. She is expected to appear at Rockville Superior Court on Aug. 7.
