EXCLUSIVE: Wallingford mothers seek justice after teens injured in hit-and-run

One boy is recovering from lacerated kidneys and a concussion and the other has a back and neck injury.

WALLINGFORD, Conn. — A group of Wallingford mothers are speaking out after their sons were injured in a hit and run last week. Police are still looking for the suspect believed to be driving a dark-colored pickup truck.

The mothers told FOX61 the two boys who were hit are in a lot of pain. They said they are grateful it wasn’t worse, but are sad this happened to their children.

They’re urging the person who did this to come forward.

“We just want closure for what happened to our boys because this is a parent’s worst nightmare," said Meghann Brooks, whose son is recovering from lacerated kidneys and a concussion.

The three teens were walking along Highland Avenue and Johnson Road Wednesday evening when two of the boys, 14-year-old Eli and 13-year-old Colby, were struck by a pickup truck that police said drove off after the collision. Their friend EJ, who saw it all happen, called Colby’s mom, Christina Wilcox.

“It was the worst moment of my life getting that phone call and just hearing that your son is laying on the ground and they’re waiting for an ambulance to get him," said Wilcox.

EJ also ran home to get his mother, Kristin Hayes.

“I was there and it was hard to see and to make the phone calls and I really just want justice for the kids,” Hayes said.

The mothers are thankful for the help of Highland Avenue neighbors who came out to wait with the boys before they were taken to the hospital. They have since been released but are still in recovery.

“My son had pretty severe injuries: he has two lacerated kidneys which are pretty severe," said Meghann Brooks, Eli's mother. "He had a pretty bad concussion. We’ve had numerous appointments."

“My son is walking with a limp and, with a back and neck injury, you don’t know if it’s going to be a lifelong injury or if it’s going to heal," Wilcox said.

Police are looking for a newer model, dark-colored, full-size pickup truck believed to have been driven by the suspect.

The mothers are asking the person who did this to come forward.

“It would just bring closure to a really really bad situation," Wilcox said. “It’s bad enough that you would hit somebody and stop but you hit children and you took off to get out of there as fast as you could and that’s heartbreaking.”

FOX61 reached out to Wallingford PD for an update on the case Tuesday but hasn’t heard back. The mothers say they are in contact with the police about the case.
