NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Florida man who used to live in Connecticut was sentenced in New Haven federal court on Wednesday to two years and six months in prison for tax evasion, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Danny D. Beeman, 67, of Beverly Hills, Fla., will have his 30-month sentence followed by three years of supervised release.
Court documents and statements made in court revealed that Beeman claimed to be the founder and developer of computer software technology capable of compressing electronically stored data. In 2012, Beeman and other individuals formed a company in Connecticut, which court documents identified as “Company A.”
Company A enabled Beeman to develop the compression software and paid Beeman approximately $316,000 to develop the software from 2013 to 2017. During this time, Beeman submitted fake invoices to Company A seeking to be paid back for purchases of computer-related equipment that prosecutors said he never purchased. Prosecutors added that Beeman acquired around $2 million from Company A through the fake invoices.
From 2013 to 2017, Beeman received approximately $2.3 million from Company A, which was all taxable income. He also had long-term capital gains income of around $1.5 million coming from the sale of shares in Company A.
Prosecutors said that Beeman never filed tax returns for any of those years, causing the Internal Revenue Service to lose around $1,054,032 in taxes. A judge has ordered Beeman to make full restitution.
Beeman pleaded guilty to tax evasion on March 14. Prosecutors said he was previously convicted in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for defrauding investors of a company he created for the purpose of promoting and selling compression software.
Beeman was sentenced to 46 months in jail in June 2006 and ordered to pay over $1.6 million in restitution. Prosecutors said his criminal history also includes convictions for fraud, larceny and forgery offenses.
After being released on bond, Beeman must report to prison on Jan. 8, 2025.
The IRS Criminal Investigation Division investigated the case.
