HARTFORD, Conn. — The Hartford Yard Goats Baseball Club has announced a new initiative to bring more youths to the ballpark.

Through a partnership with Eversource, New England’s largest energy delivery company, the Yard Goats have brought back the Student Reading Challenge for the 2024 season, according to a press release from the team on Monday.

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade who read five books outside of the school curriculum will receive two tickets to a Yard Goats game at Dunkin’ Park on Main Street in Hartford. A parent or guardian can register students on the Yard Goats website from now until May 6; students will have until July 15 to complete the reading challenge.

One lucky student will be chosen to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Yard Goats game.

“We are extremely excited to once again partner with Eversource on the Yard Goats Reading Challenge, which was very successful last season,” Yard Goats President Tim Restall said. “This program is a fun way for students to set reading goals and get rewarded for their efforts with tickets to a Yard Goats game. We look forward to honoring these diligent readers at a game this summer.”

The Yard Goats encourage school principals, teachers and parents to inform students of the program’s return this summer. The team introduced the 2024 reading challenge with a video of “The Lorax” by Dr. Suess; the video is available on their website.

“The Lorax” is a children’s book focused on the danger of greed and how it can cause human destruction of the natural environment, according to the release.

Eversource Vice President of Energy Efficiency and Electric Mobility Tilak Subrahmanian said his company is thrilled to support the reading challenge again this year. Eversource encourages families in the greater Hartford region to meet their reading goals and enjoy a Yard Goats game.

“Setting and accomplishing goals is a big part of success, whether for students with summer reading or for us at Eversource working toward a clean energy future, and we’re proud to partner with the Yard Goats on this important and educational challenge,” Subrahmanian said.

The Yard Goats are the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. The team’s home opener is Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. against the Bowie Baysox, the Baltimore Orioles’ Double-A Eastern League affiliate.

Individual tickets for all Yard Goats home games, season tickets, group tickets, hospitality options, luxury options and luxury suites are on sale for the 2024 season; those interested can call 860-246-GOAT.
