Cameron Young reflects on a historic day at the Travelers Championship

Young shot a 59, becoming one of only 12 PGA Tour golfers ever to post below 60. He put the accomplishment in perspective following Round 3.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Cameron Young had a performance for the ages Saturday during Round 3 of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

Young completed the first sub-60 round on the PGA Tour in nearly four years by posting an 11-under 59. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, had most recently accomplished the feat at the TPC Boston in 2020 at The Northern Trust.

Young is only the 12th PGA Tour golfer ever to shoot a sub-60 round, and the achievement has only happened 13 times on the tour.

Following the round, Young reflected on his historic day in Connecticut by putting it in perspective.

“It’s certainly pretty cool. It’s fun to have your name on a list that short, but there’s some full tournaments that I would probably rank above it in terms of just overall achievement,” Young said. “I feel like one day doesn’t necessarily warrant a crowning achievement of a career, but it’s certainly my high of the month.”

Young surged into the top 10 on Saturday but said he would try to forget the performance by Sunday’s final round. He said he plans to stick to his routine and see what he can do but doesn’t expect to match his Round 3 performance.

“I would plan on maybe not doing something similar tomorrow, but I know if I were to have any chance to win, I’d have to shoot another low one,” Young said.

When asked if he knew Saturday would be special when he woke up, Young replied, “Nope.”

He said he would have preferred to go back to sleep but instead stuck to the routine he follows every time he arrives at the golf course.

“I got a coffee, ate, saw the physio and went out there and warmed up. I didn’t feel particularly awesome. I chunked a few less on the range than I did yesterday, then came out and was very comfortable. Things just started coming down close to the hole,” Young said.

During Round 3, Young was partnered with Jordan Spieth, the 2017 Travelers Championship winner. He said that he always enjoys playing with Spieth, one of the most recognizable names on the tour.

“He’s obviously a really nice guy and a great player; didn’t have his best day today, but he’s very easy to play with. It’s always fun,” Young said. “Whenever you play with someone like him you get some pretty good crowds. I know not many of them out there started out there for me, and by the end maybe there were half a dozen that were watching me out there, so it was fun. I enjoy playing with those crowds and playing with a great player like Jordan.”

While Young played phenomenally in Round 3, he failed to set the course record at TPC River Highlands. In 2016, Jim Furyk shot a 58 at the Travelers Championship, setting the record for the lowest round in PGA Tour history.

After his round wrapped up on Saturday, Young wasn’t concerned about record books or making history. When asked about his family, he inferred that there are more significant facets to life than golf.

“I’m married and I have three children, so I think there are far more important things to me than what I do on the golf course, and at the same time, I also provide for my family with how I do on the golf course. It’s kind of a balance there that you have to be okay with,” Young said.

The PGA Tour continues Sunday at TPC River Highlands, as the top golfers in the world set out on the final round of the Travelers Championship.
