Fight breaks out at CT high school football game that was already delayed due to safety concerns

A disturbance involving players from Norwich Free Academy and Fitch High School on Friday in Groton is under investigation, according to police.

GROTON, Conn. — Groton police officers working the football game between Norwich Free Academy and Fitch High School on Friday reported a fight, according to a release from Groton police.

Officers said a disturbance occurred between the field house and concession stand following the game around 6:40 p.m. Groton police say the incident involved players from both teams.

The fight was quickly broken up, and no injuries were reported. According to Groton police on Saturday, no arrests have been made. The disturbance remains under investigation.

Groton police say members of their department will be working with Board of Education staff from both schools to identify the students involved.

Additional safety measures were reportedly taken before the game, which was originally scheduled to be played on Thursday at 6 p.m. It was moved to Friday afternoon after school administrators and Groton police were made aware of potential concerns.

On Thursday, students contacted the Fitch High School Resource Officer regarding troubling social media posts made by people who are not associated with the high school or the game.

The game was rescheduled for 4 p.m. Friday with additional police and security on-hand. Several restrictions were also put in place.

Each varsity player was only allowed to invite four family members to be spectators. They still had to purchase a ticket. Every spectator was asked to bring photo identification along with their ticket.

Only NFA and Fitch students were admitted; they had to bring their student IDs. Students from both schools were checked in by their school administrator at their designated gate.

Despite the precautions, Groton police say that an incident still occurred.
