Hundreds of US flights impacted by Hurricane Milton

AAA urged travelers to be flexible and sign up for alerts with their carrier.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — More than 1,900 flights were canceled across the U.S. Wednesday ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall, according to FlightAware.

Florida airports are seeing the biggest impact, with Tampa, Clearwater, Fort Myers and Orlando Airports all closed.

The last plane to Tweed New Haven Airport from Orlando, Fla. flew out this morning.

Pia Vasquez, who lives in Connecticut, said her mother was on that flight. She said she is relieved tonight to know that her mom is out of harm’s way.

“We just grabbed whatever we were able to and lucky enough, because we just find out that they were closing the airport in Orlando at 8 a.m., and so we were lucky to just have her on her last flight,” Vasquez said. “Everybody's scrambling just as we were.”

The travel headaches are not only affecting Floridians. Both American and Southwest airlines are warning about delays for those planning to fly anywhere over the next few days.

AAA urged travelers to be flexible and sign up for alerts with their carrier.

“When there are massive weather events, hurricanes, there are ripple effects to flights across the entire country,” Tracy Noble, AAA spokesperson for Great Hartford, said. “If you have travel plans within the next several days, make sure that you are in contact, not only with your airline, with your travel agent and download the app for your airline. That way you get the most up to date information and you can figure out whether or not your flight is going to be impacted.”

Advisors said that those who have travel plans to Florida might be able to change their flight without paying a fee.

American, Delta, United and Southwest Airlines all said they are offering waivers.

Meantime, Miami and Fort Lauderdale Airports are open tonight.

As of Wednesday evening, people can still book a flight out of Bradley International. That is all subject to change depending on the impact from Hurricane Milton.
