GRANBY, Conn. — The old, squeaky, rusted out shopping cart has been given a makeover thanks to A.I. technology. This week, Geissler’s Market in Granby showcased its new fleet of “Caper Carts”.
The carts are part of a partnership between grocery service Instacart and Geissler’s and, currently, Instacart says the Caper Carts are the first of their kind in Connecticut or Massachusetts.
“[Caper Carts] have got cameras that scan items as you put them in the basket,” said Nick Nickitas, the general manager for local independent grocery at Instacart. “It’s got a scale at the bottom so it knows when you put produce in and how much and it’s got a screen that shows you coupons so you will never miss a deal again.”
“A.I. has come to the shopping aisles,” said Bob Rybick, the CEO and President of Geissler’s. “It’s a rolling register. It allows you to track your spend, see how much you are saving.”
“We’re finding that people old and young that are enjoying the experience,” he added. “They find it easy to use and they love the interactive nature of it.”
The Caper Carts are now being used at all seven Geissler’s Supermarket locations and Rybick is optimistic.
“I think this is absolutely the future.”
