DANBURY, Conn. — A collaborative effort by several law enforcement agencies in Danbury resulted in multiple arrests on Tuesday, according to a release from the city’s police department.
Around 3:14 p.m. on July 16, detectives from the Danbury Police Department Special Investigations Division, members of the Drug Enforcement Administration and a K-9 officer from the Bethel Police Department executed multiple search warrants that stemmed from a months’ long investigation of illegal drug sales in the city, the release said.
Detectives began investigating after receiving complaints from concerned citizens about illegal drug, liquor and cigarette sales by Vera Lucia Ribeiro-Menezes, 70, at an apartment on Foster Street, according to police.
“Detectives were familiar with this location, as they have executed search warrants there three times in the past,” the release said.
While conducting surveillance of Ribeiro-Menezes’ apartment, detectives saw suspected buyers entering and leaving the unit, including an individual later identified as Walter Whitlock, 57, of Bethel, police said.
Detectives approached Whitlock and placed him in custody when he was found to possess a rock-like substance that field tests revealed to be crack, the release said. Detectives then executed their court-authorized search warrant on the apartment and placed Ribeiro-Menezes under arrest for sale of crack cocaine.
Police said a search of the apartment produced over $8,500 in cash, an electronic scale and crack cocaine packaged for sale.
According to the release, Ribeiro-Menezes is charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia within 200 feet of a school, sale of narcotics and sale of narcotics within 200 feet of a school. Her bond is $150,000.
Whitlock was charged with possession of a controlled substance, police said. His bond was not listed in the release.
