NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Waterbury man was sentenced to six years in federal prison in a New Haven courthouse on Friday for illegally possessing a gun and violating the conditions of his supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Alexander Calderon, 28, who last resided in Waterbury, was on supervised release following a prior federal conviction for trafficking narcotics, according to prosecutors.
In April 2019, Calderon was sentenced in Hartford federal court to multiple years in prison followed by supervised release for a gang-related drug trafficking offense, prosecutors said. When Calderon was released in December 2021, he began serving his three years of supervised release.
Prosecutors said that four victims were wounded in a shooting shortly after midnight on March 21, 2022, outside of a bar on Scovill Street in Waterbury. A Waterbury police detective who was nearby said saw Calderon discard a silver handgun under a vehicle.
Calderon was taken into custody as officers recovered the weapon, a Walther PPK .380 handgun, according to prosecutors. Officers also found several spent shell casings at the scene, including a .380 casing that was connected to the handgun discarded by Calderon, prosecutors said.
Calderon was arrested on March 21, 2022, and has been detained since. Prosecutors said he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a gun by a felon on Jan. 5.
According to prosecutors, Calderon was sentenced to 64 months in prison for the firearm offense and eight more months of jail time for violating the conditions of his supervised release.
At the time of the shooting, Calderon was charged with multiple offenses including reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and criminal possession of a firearm. Online court records do not indicate the status of those state charges.
