NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Meriden man was sentenced last Friday to 10 years in prison, suspended after eight years served, for criminal possession of a firearm, according to a release from the state’s Division of Criminal Justice on Monday.
Brandon Ramos, 25, was sentenced in New Haven. His sentence is followed by five years of probation, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said that on Aug. 23, 2021, Ramos was in possession of a gun outside of a party in Meriden when he had previously been convicted of a criminal offense that prohibited him from carrying the weapon.
Despite being prohibited, prosecutors said Ramos brought a loaded gun to the party and fired it several times.
Ten years is the maximum prison sentence Ramos could have received, according to prosecutors.
While announcing the sentence, the court said there was good cause to extend the probational period to five years, the maximum period authorized by law, according to prosecutors.
Ramos waved his right to a jury, prosecutors said; he asked the judge to determine if he was guilty or not guilty of the crime charged.
