WESTPORT, Conn. — On Friday night, Westport firefighters were dispatched after receiving a report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries on Interstate 95 northbound between Exits 17 and 18, according to a release from the Westport Fire Department.
At 8:23 p.m., Engine 4, Engine 5, Rescue 3 and the Shift Commander were all called to the scene, the fire department said.
When Engine 4 arrived, one vehicle with heavy damage was reported. The vehicle was pinned under the guard rail with one occupant still inside, according to the release.
The fire department said that firefighters with Engine 4 conducted an initial patient assessment, deployed a protective hose line and assisted with stabilization. As Rescue 3 and Engine 5 made their way to the scene, the vehicle was stabilized in place.
Then, first responders used the “Jaws of Life”, a combination of hydraulic and battery-operated rescue tools, according to the fire department, which said the occupant was extracted from the vehicle in 12 minutes.
The individual who was rescued was taken to WEMS for transport to the hospital, the fire department said. During the incident, Engine 2 was “special called” for additional manpower, and Connecticut State Police were on scene to investigate and assist with traffic control. The fire department said the last unit cleared the scene at 9:50 p.m.
