MERIDEN, Conn. — A Meriden middle school student was arrested Sunday after making threats against the school on Snapchat, according to the city's police department.
The Meriden Police Department was notified of a threatening Snapchat post Sunday morning circulating on social media that was targeting students at Thomas Edison Middle School.
According to police, investigators received assistance from Meriden Public Schools and the FBI's New Haven office. The post was eventually determined to have originated from a Edison Middle School student, police said.
The student is facing charges of threatening in the first degree and breach of peace in the second degree and was released to the custody of his parents, who police said have been cooperative. He is expected in juvenile court Monday morning.
According to police, a crisis intervention specialist went to the student's home and conducted an evaluation. Police said the student is subject to further disciplinary action from the Board of Education.
As a precaution, the Meriden police will increase their presence at Thomas Edison throughout this week.
Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Detective Shedlock at (203) 630-6285 or via email at mshedlock@meridenct.gov.
