Ansonia Middle School adds police presence Friday as authorities investigate social media posts

The school district said that social media posts alleging there was a gun in the middle school are incorrect.

ANSONIA, Conn. — Ansonia Middle School will have an increased police presence Friday as authorities investigate the legitimacy of social media posts possibly targeting Ansonia Public Schools, according to officials.

"Out of an abundance of caution" for the safety of students and staff, the school district said Thursday that an extra police presence will be at the school as a "precautionary measure" taken "to provide an added layer of security and to foster a safe and positive learning environment."

Police investigated social media posts and said Friday that they were found to be "incorrect." Police determined that the incidents mentioned in the posts were about something that happened elsewhere on Wednesday and were not verified threats targeting Ansonia Middle School or any other Ansonia school.

"Based on the investigation it appears that rumor and innuendo were taken as fact then posted on social media," Ansonia police said. "While social media is a tremendous tool to share information across a wide audience, incidents like this highlight the danger of unverified, incorrect, secondhand information being posted online. This in no way should discourage someone from reporting any incidents of threats or violence to the police department, we just ask that you use caution when making social media posts regarding these incidents especially when the investigation is active and ongoing."
