Connecticut shoppers concerned about recent listeria outbreaks

Following last week’s recall of Boar's Head deli meat, another listeria risk has led to nearly 20 produce products being recalled at various Aldi and Walmart stores.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Recent food recalls impacting grocery stores in as many as 13 states across the country are concerning shoppers in Connecticut.

Nearly 20 kinds of vegetables sold at Aldi, Kroger and Walmart locations across the country have been recalled due to a possible listeria contamination. Over a dozen states, including Connecticut, are being impacted by the recall, which is an expansion of a previous recall of cucumbers that had possibly been contaminated with listeria.

“Hygiene is important, not just for you but for your food,” said Victor Deloureiro of West Hartford.

Wiers Farm of Willard, Ohio expanded its recall to include several vegetables and bagged salads:

  • Bagged poblanos
  • Cubanelle peppers
  • Green beans
  • Salad cucumbers
  • Serranos
  • Organic bell peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Yellow squash
  • Zucchini
  • Bagged green beans & jalapenos from Freshire Farms
  • Bulk Anaheim peppers
  • Cilantro
  • Cubanelle peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Green beans
  • Green bell peppers
  • Habanero peppers
  • Hungarian wax peppers
  • Jalapeno peppers
  • Mustard greens
  • Pickling cucumbers
  • Parsley
  • Poblanos
  • Tomatillos

According to the FDA, the impacted food items were packed between July 5 and July 12.

Consuming food contaminated with listeria can lead to a serious infection called listeriosis. It’s especially dangerous for pregnant women and the elderly.

“I’ve never had listeria, thank God but I know people who have and it’s not something you want to have in your body,” said Al Ogilvie of Newington.

This outbreak comes on the heels of last week’s listeria outbreak involving deli meats. Stop & Shop and Big Y had to close their deli counters for much of the day when they found out their products could be the source of this outbreak. Now, shoppers have another reason to watch out before they check out. Though some are thankful they have home-grown options.

“I’m grateful that I grow my own,” said Debra Walsh of West Hartford. “Just the sense of accomplishment, but I know where it comes from. I sort of know what’s in the soil.”

Anyone who has consumed potentially contaminated produce and experiences symptoms should seek medical attention right away.
