GREENWICH, Conn. — Police say a fight among coworkers in a moving vehicle caused a crash on a Connecticut interstate on Sunday.
A Florida man was arrested after fighting with two passengers in a box truck, resulting in a crash on Interstate 95 in Greenwich, according to Connecticut State Police.
Vilhomme Mondesir, 46, of Lake Worth, Fla., is facing charges of assault in the third degree, two counts of reckless endangerment in the second degree, and failure to maintain lane.
State police said that troopers from Troop G were sent to the crash at 4:31 p.m. in the area of Exit 5 on the highway. Greenwich police were also called to assist.
Investigators at the scene learned that Mondesir, the driver of the truck, was involved in a physical fight with two adult passengers at the time of the crash, state police said. Passengers told the troopers that they were all coworkers.
According to state police, the passengers said Mondesir had pulled over at a shopping plaza to buy food after driving for several hours and "quickly returned to the vehicle."
The passengers said they asked Mondesir for more time on their break before leaving the plaza, but he allegedly started yelling at them that they did not need one and started driving onto I-95 South, state police said.
Mondesir allegedly continued to yell at the passengers as they told him that he could be fired for not giving them breaks, state police said. The passengers told investigators that a fight broke out after he punched one of them in the face.
As the fight continued with the other passenger attempting to intervene, state police said the truck began swerving from the right lane into the right shoulder and entered an embankment after hitting a metal guardrail.
The passenger who said Mondesir hit them had visible facial injuries, state police said. The other two both had minor injuries.
State police said dash cam video from inside the truck supported the passengers' allegations, including that Mondesir punched one in the face and that his failure to drive the truck safely led to the crash.
Mondesir was held on a $5,000 bond and appeared at Stamford Superior Court on Monday, state police said.
