WESTPORT, Conn. — A New York man was charged in a car collision involving an unoccupied state police cruiser on Interstate 95 south in Westport, according to Connecticut State Police Monday.
Sonny Abdul-Hardy, 47, of Bronx, N.Y., was issued an infraction in violation of failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, resulting in a motor vehicle accident and failure to move over for emergency vehicles.
At 3:08 a.m., troopers from Troop G in Bridgeport went to the area of exit 17 on I-95 south in Westport after receiving a report about the crash, state police said.
Troopers at the scene found a state police cruiser stationed in the left lane with its emergency lights on.
Based on preliminary information, state police said they determined that a 2015 Kia Sorrento, driven by Abdul-Hardy, was traveling in the left lane and had collided with the rear of the stationed cruiser after failing to safely slow down and switching lanes to avoid it.
The trooper who the cruiser was assigned to was outside the cruiser at the time and was not hurt, state police said.
Abdul-Hardy was treated for minor injuries by Norwalk EMS at the scene but refused to be taken to the hospital.
State police are asking all drivers to use extra caution when traveling near emergency vehicles, including police, fire, EMS, Department of Transportation vehicles and tow trucks, and to remember to slow down and move over when necessary.
