STAMFORD, Conn. — The Stamford Police Department is reporting that a fatal crash occurred near 690 Atlantic St. around 11:52 p.m. on Friday.

Stamford police who were on patrol responded to the scene after learning that an SUV had crashed into a utility pole. The vehicle’s airbags deployed, according to the police department.

When first responders arrived, the SUV’s driver, 71-year-old James Morley of New York, was unresponsive, police say. He was removed from the vehicle by the fire department, who administered medical treatment as quickly as possible.

Morley was taken to Stamford Hospital. Police say his condition was initially listed as critical, but he later passed away at the hospital.

The Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating all aspects of the crash, the police department says.

Stamford police believe that Morley likely suffered a medical problem prior to the crash, but the final determination will be made by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone who may have information related to the crash can contact the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad at 203-977-4712.

Stamford police say Sgt. Jeffrey Booth is investigating the crash.
