Shelton crash with car fire leaves 1 dead: Police

First responders found the scene of a one-car crash with the car on fire, according to police.

SHELTON, Conn. — A crash that involved a car fire in the town of Shelton Sunday night left one person dead, according to the town's police department.

Police said that they were called at 11:30 p.m., along with the town's fire department and EMS to Commerce Drive and Research Drive for a report of a car on fire.

Firefighters and officers found a one-car crash with the car on fire, according to police.

First responders pulled Mauricio Sierra Zapata, 24, of Shelton, out of the car and brought him to Bridgeport Hospital where he later died, police said. 

The cause and events leading up to the crash are currently unknown.

The Shelton Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the collision.
