BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — The University of Bridgeport was put on lockdown Tuesday evening after police said a shooting that injured one person took place inside a dining hall. It's since been lifted as of Wednesday morning, according to officials. Now, police have identified a person of interest wanted for questioning.
Bridgeport police are looking for Dylan Cruz-Tillery, 18, of Queens, N.Y., who is a person of interest in this shooting and is wanted for questioning.
Bridgeport Police Chief Robert Porter said that just after 6:30 p.m., the city's 911 center received a call about shots fired at the Marina Dining Hall on the university's campus.
Porter said an officer assigned to the university responded within minutes and found a "chaotic scene" in the dining hall with several people inside. Police found one person who was shot and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Porter said the individual is "alert" and working with detectives to locate the suspect.
Police noted that it was not an active shooter situation and that it was an isolated incident. Neither the suspected shooter nor the victim, both young men, are university students.
Porter said they were visiting campus and using the dining facilities when the shooting happened.
While police said that the suspect may have left the campus, they will maintain an active presence there Tuesday night and Wednesday.
"Students and staff of the University of Bridgeport are safe, and there is no immediate threat to the campus," the EOC said.
The private college's president, Danielle Wilken, said the dining hall was open to the public Tuesday evening because of sporting events on campus.
Wilken said in a statement:
"I am grateful to the Bridgeport Police Department, University of Bridgeport’s Security Team, and first responders for their endless commitment to the UB community. Campus safety is our number one priority.
We appreciate all the love and outpouring of support from our local officials — including the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and state delegation — who have all offered their support.
It is important to note that neither the victim nor the shooter are UB students but were visitors on campus. As Bridgeport Police Chief Porter said, this is an isolated incident.
We continue to take strong measures to ensure the safety of our community, and we will follow the directives of the BPD."
The nonprofit school has about 4,100 undergraduate and graduate students.
