TRUMBULL, Conn. — A driver died in a crash Wednesday in Trumbull after drifting across Route 8 south and crashing into a concrete bridge abutment, Connecticut State Police said.
Troopers from State Police Troop G responded to a crash involving a van at 4:44 a.m. in the area of Exit 7, according to state police.
Based on preliminary information, state police said they determined that a Ford E250 was traveling in the right lane when for an unknown reason, it went across both travel lanes, onto the grassy median, and hit the abutement for the White Plains Road overpass.
As a result of the collision, the Ford became fully engulfed in flames, state police said.
42-year-old Marcos Rodrigues-Deoliveira, of Bridgeport, was identified as the driver who died in the crash.
Route 8 south was closed for four hours during the crash as the Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad assisted with the investigation.
State police said the Department of Transportation inspected the overpass that was hit and found no structural damages.
Fire departments from Trumbull and the Department of Transportation also responded to the collision, according to state police.
