EAST WINDSOR, Conn. — An East Hartford man is facing a slew of charges, including kidnapping and reckless driving, after he crashed into an ambulance on Interstate 91 and then police cruisers trying to stop him.

State police were called to I-91 South near Exit 44 in East Windsor around 10:42 p.m. Thursday after a Chevrolet Cavalier sideswiped an ambulance and continued to drive.

Troopers also saw a female inside the convertible that seemed to be in distress and possibly in danger.

According to troopers, the driver, identified as Ryan Gilbert, 31, intentionally hit state police cruisers during a pursuit and became boxed in between state police and Hartford police cruisers.

No one in the ambulance and the convertible reported injuries from the crash, state police said.

Gilbert refused to take any field sobriety tests and was taken into state police custody, troopers said.

Gilbert was arrested and faces dozens of charges connected to the kidnapping, the ambulance crash and the events that followed during the police pursuit. The charges include kidnapping, driving under the influence, evading responsibility, and many driving and vehicle violations.

He was held on a $105,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned in court Friday.
