Teen arrested in investigation of targeted threats on social media: Glastonbury police

Police said the posts included a bomb threat to Glastonbury High School, death threats towards African Americans and references to the KKK and Hitler.

GLASTONBURY, Conn. — A sixteen-year-old was arrested on Monday after the investigation of multiple threats made on social media, according to the Glastonbury Police Department.

The teen is facing charges of intimidation based on bias or bigotry in the second degree, threatening in the first degree, computer crime, criminal impersonation, breach of peace in the second degree, harassment in the second degree and falsely reporting an incident in the first degree.

Police said that on June 11, they learned from the town's Youth and Family Services about a profile page on Discord, which included a bomb threat to Glastonbury High School, death threats towards African Americans and references to the KKK and Hitler.

To determine the owner of the Discord account, Glastonbury police issued multiple subpoenas for IP addresses, phone records, and data from the Discord website, police said. Officers also worked with school administration from GHS and security staff during the investigation.

Police said they determined that the owner of the Discord account was not a suspect, but instead a victim, after a 16-year-old had illegally accessed the account and changed the profile page to include the threats.

Investigators also found that the teen sent direct messages from the account to others with more death threats, naming specific African American students who attended GHS, according to police.

The teen was arrested on July 22 after investigators identified them as a suspect, police said. Investigators also determined that the teen had no access to weapons such as guns or explosives and that the threats targeted the Discount account holder.

Parents of all the victims mentioned in the posts were made aware about the threats and the investigation, police said.

The teen was later turned over to juvenile court authorities in Hartford, according to police.

In a statement issued on July 19, Glastonbury Public Schools Superintendent Alan Bookman, Ph. D., said that a teen behind a "threatening social media post" was a Glastonbury High School student and was no longer enrolled in the town's school system, and not allowed to attend any school events or enter the school campus.
