HARTFORD, Conn. — A Pennsylvania man is facing several charges after he was found trying to break into a state office building in Hartford, according to state police.
According to officials, troopers in Hartford were alerted to an alarm activation just after 5 p.m. at the Comptroller's building on Capitol Avenue. The building is the location of state offices including the Attorney General, the Secretary of the State and the Teachers Retirement Board.
When state police got to the scene, they found 43-year-old Cristian Gonzalez of Shillington, Penn., forcing his way into a high-voltage electrical conduit area on the outside of the building. Officials said Gonzalez did not gain access to the building itself and it wasn't a targeted incident.
Gonzalez was taken into custody, and officials searched the building, ensuring it was secured and no other individuals were inside.
Gonzalez reportedly caused damage to various utilities, resulting in power outages and system failures at the building.
Officials have charged Gonzalez with third-degree burglary, possession of burglar tools, second-degree criminal trespassing, and first-degree criminal mischief. He was held on a $50,000 bond and appeared in court Monday.
"I find probable cause based on the police report," the judge president over his case said in court. "The crime with which he is charged are the crimes with which his charge are very serious, very serious intrusion into public property and the risks to the public and to the state office employees who work in that building, so I'm going to concur with the commissioner and set bond to 50,000 cash."
