BLOOMFIELD, Conn. — A Windsor man was found guilty of a fatal shooting in Bloomfield from Feb. 2020, according to the state's Division of Criminal Justice Thursday.
On Aug. 19, a jury in Hartford Superior Court found Russell Smith, 49, of Windsor guilty of murder in connection to the shooting death of Franklin Spencer, 47, of East Hartford, the DCJ said. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 29 in Hartford.
Citing evidence from court, the DCJ said that Bloomfield police responded to the shooting on Feb. 22, 2020 at the Elizabeth's Bar and Restaurant. Officers heard gunshots across the street and found Aaron Walker, 43, of East Hartford and Spencer on the ground outside.
Walker had been shot in the chest and leg, and Spencer was shot twice in the head, the DCJ said. Both were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.
According to the DCJ, Smith took off from the scene and was arrested five and a half months later in Georgia by the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
The murder charge Smith is facing in connection to Walker's death is pending as the jury could not reach a verdict on that count, the DCJ noted.
