Body found after blaze inside illegal attic apartment in New Britain: Officials

An unidentified man jumped from one of the windows in the building and was taken to an area hospital for burns.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — A man jumped out of a building on fire after a blaze broke out inside an illegal attic apartment in New Britain, officials said.

According to the mayor's office, a body was found inside of the home. Additional information is not yet known. 

The fire broke out around 12:24 in the attic of a two-family home on Belden Street. Heavy fire was reported from the building’s top floor.

City officials said the fire broke out in what appeared to be an illegal attic apartment.

An unidentified man jumped from one of the windows in the building and was taken to an area hospital for burns. Two other people - identified as a mother and daughter - were evacuated from the building, officials said.

There were no other reported injuries. Additional information was not immediately available.

The scene is still active. Once the fire is under control, the fire marshal is expected to launch an investigation.
