PLYMOUTH, Connecticut — Police in Plymouth are investigating an apparent road rage incident from Friday night where shots were fired.
Around 10:15 p.m., officers were called to the area of Wolcott Road and Country Garden Court after a resident reported hearing gunshots and a car driving south.
While officers were responding, Litchfield County Dispatch called police, reporting a Subaru WRX at Cumberland Farms on Wolcott Road, in Wolcott, was found with bullet holes.
Plymouth officers went to the scene and found the car had multiple bullet holes and that the driver, the sole occupant, was uninjured. Police said the suspect car was a newer (2020 or newer) gunmetal-gray sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry, with a black rear lip on the trunk and a Connecticut license plate.
Police said they believed this was a road rage incident, which has been increasing over the years, not just in Connecticut but nationwide. According to The Trace, a nonprofit newsroom organization that reports on gun violence, road rage shootings have increased by more than 400% around the country in nearly a decade.
"There's a lot of people yelling out the window and stuff," said Karla Jean Cilibert of Wolcott. "Just ignore it and go the other way. Don't get involved. Don't engage with it."
In the same study, 13% of respondents in Connecticut said another driver got out of their vehicle to try and start a fight.
Some residents are voicing their worry over the increasing trend.
"I've seen it happen before, and that's why whenever something bad happens on the road, I just completely ignore it," said Chris Adams of Bristol. "If somebody cuts me off or something like that, or somebody's driving crazy, I don't say anything to them. I don't even look at them.
This current road rage incident is still under investigation.
Plymouth police ask anyone with information to give them a call at their routine line: (860)-589-7779.
