FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Firefighters rescued a man in Fairfield Saturday afternoon after he was trapped for an extended period of time inside a small boat compartment, according to a Facebook post from the Fairfield Fire Department.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Burroughs Road when the Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call about a person stuck inside a boat.
When the fire department arrived on scene, firefighters discovered the man semi-responsive but stuck in a tight storage space used for the boat’s anchor and chain. The only access point was an 18-inch by 18-inch triangular hatch.
The fire department says the man's friends reported he was last seen about 24 hours prior.
Firefighters immediately called for backup, and Assistant Chief Phil Higgins became the incident commander. After assessing the situation, a technical rescue plan was developed. Crews carefully extricated the man from the confined space using lifting and stabilization techniques.
Once freed, the man was lowered from the boat and placed on a stretcher. The fire department says he was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital for treatment. The cause of his entrapment remains under investigation, and the victim’s current condition has not been released.
