WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The golf season started swinging in West Hartford on Wednesday when Josh Moses, the head professional at Rockledge Golf Club, made the move to open the public course for the season.
“We’re playing golf,” said Moses. “The sun is shining and the course is ready.”
A March 13 opening isn’t unprecedented for Rockledge -- the course has been around for nearly a century -- but Moses said, “this is very early, it’s always a bonus when you can open this early.”

Temperatures in the 60s got golfers like James Scheide on the greens to tee off for the first time all year.
“It’s great to golf any time of the year but when you get out this early and start early, we will take it,” Scheide said after splitting the first fairway down the middle.
Just 20 miles to the west, it is a different world at Ski Sundown, where the season hasn’t quite melted away yet.
Skiers were taking advantage of the bright sun and soft snow in spring-like conditions.
“Everybody has a little spring fever," said Bob Switzgable, Sundown’s owner. "It’s a beautiful day, the snow is soft and we’re seeing a lot of new faces.”
Switzgable added that making snow throughout the season and then stockpiling it has helped prolong the ability to ski and snowboard for the guests that have been showing up from all over the area.
“We’re doing a lot of grooming at night so we will be here during the weekend and probably beyond,” Switzgable added.
“I still got more time out here – the legs are feeling good, so I’ll be out here as long as I can,” said Glenn Cassis, a veteran of the Sundown slopes, ski instructor and Bloomfield resident.
