DEEP RIVER, Conn. — A man accused of stabbing several people in Massachusetts has been named as a suspect in an ongoing homicide investigation in Deep River, Conn., according to state police.
On Saturday, just after 3:30 p.m., Connecticut State Police from Troop F in Westbrook were called to a home on Merriwold Lane in Deep River.
Investigators learned that a suspect approached the home and threw a shovel through the front door windowpane, then left.
According to state police, the complainant identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jared Ravizza, who had been staying at a nearby rental property at 15 Maritone Lane. The resident told police before this incident, they heard an “audible disturbance” coming from that same address.
Other neighbors nearby told FOX61 the same thing. That includes a man living near the property, who said his mother heard something similar earlier in the week.
“She overheard them. Really, really loud voices. She could not understand what they were arguing about, but they were upset with each other,” said Charlie Brashears.
On Saturday, when troopers arrived at the home on Maritone Lane following the information from a neighbor, they found 70-year-old Bruce Feldman, of West Hartford, outside with visible injuries. Feldman was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the investigation, state police learned information indicating that Ravizza was at the home earlier in the day. Police found some of Ravizza’s personal items at the home, and witnesses provided a description that was consistent with the suspect’s appearance and car.
As law enforcement in Connecticut were searching for Ravizza, they were notified by Massachusetts State Police that he crashed his car after a police pursuit in Sandwich, Mass. The suspect was subsequently arrested in connection to two other crimes just across state lines.
Police say those crimes were allegedly committed after the Deep River homicide, around 7 p.m. that same Saturday.
On Tuesday morning, Ravizza was arraigned in a Massachusetts courtroom on two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, one count of armed assault to murder, and indecent exposure. The judge ordered a competency exam.
In the courtroom, prosecutors described the incident connected to the charges, happening at a McDonald’s in Plymouth, Mass.
“When he got up to the drive through window, he was argumentative with a male employee, and lunged out the window of his vehicle and stabbed the male employee in the forearm with what appeared to be a long kitchen knife,” said Assistant District Attorney David Cutshall, Plymouth County District Attorney's Office. He went on to say, “He then parked his vehicle, entered the store, and then proceeded behind the counter where he stabbed a female employee in the back of her upper left arm.”
Both victims were sent to the hospital, but are in stable condition. Police said Ravizza was arrested shortly after the police chase ended in a crash in Sandwich, Mass.
Prosecutors said Ravizza was then also connected to a separate incident they said happened an hour earlier in Braintree, Mass. That’s when police said Ravizza entered an AMC movie theatre without paying and stabbed four young girls. Police said the victims in that incident are expected to be okay.
As for the crime in Deep River, a spokesperson for Connecticut State Police said, “A person cannot be charged for crime(s) in Connecticut while held in custody in another state. Any person subject to criminal charges in state must be extradited back to CT by warrant when that time comes.”
Connecticut State Police said an arrest warrant exists for Ravizza and that further information will be released after Ravizza is extradited back to the state.
