MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — A motorcyclist has died, and a passenger is in critical condition after crash with a deer in Middletown late Saturday afternoon, according to police.
Around 5:45 p.m., Middletown police were called to Randolph Road by Zoars Pond for a motorcycle crash.
Middletown police identified the driver as 53-year-old Michael Thiede, and the passenger was 49-year-old Rebekah Cardona.
Witnesses said Thiede and Cardona were heading westbound on Randolph Road when a deer jumped out of the field at Zoars Pond. Thiede had no time to react and collided with the deer. He lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the guardrail on the north side of Randolph Road.
Due to the extent of his injuries, Thiede was pronounced dead on scene, according to the South District Fire and Hunter’s Ambulance medical personnel. Cardona was transported to Hartford Hospital where she remains in critical condition.
The crash is being investigated by Officer Sanford of the Middletown Police Traffic Division. Anyone with information is urged to contact Sanford at 860-638-4061.
