MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Two adults and two children are recovering after jumping from their burning home in Middletown, officials said.
The fire broke out at a multi-family home on Dunham Avenue around 8 p.m. Sunday. The Middletown South Fire District was en route to the residence when they learned of reports that people were possibly trapped in an upstairs apartment.
When they got to the scene five minutes later, they found a heavy fire in the back of the multi-family home up on the second floor.
Firefighters learned that the two adults and two children who were up there had jumped from the windows with help from several neighbors. Officials said all four were taken to Middlesex Hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
Firefighters also found and rescued three dogs from the building and they were later cared for by MIddletown Animal Control officers.
Officials said the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. The South Fire District was helped by the Middletown, Westfield, and Middletown fire departments. The Haddam and Durham fire departments provided station coverage.
Officials said five people were displaced from the multi-family home and are receiving help from the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
